70.3 New Orleans preview

Friday 17 April 2015
New Orleans is known as one of the most culturally rich destinations in America. Once a year, this city steeped in art, history and music, plays host to Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans. Athletes travel from all over to take part in this unique event and scenic course, which flows throughout this fascinating area.

On April 22, athletes will begin their day on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, swimming 1.2 miles, point-to-point along the Lakeshore Drive seawall. The journey continues with the 56-mile, out-and-back bike course, followed by a 13.1-mile run along the lakefront. Competitors will finish on the campus of the University of New Orleans Research and Technology Park to the sound of live music.

"The Big Easy," as the city is famously called, is a favorite event among racers, as well as spectators. With strong influences from diverse places like France, Africa and the Caribbean Islands, New Orleans is filled with an endless variety of things to discover and explore. Visitors can sample delectable cuisine at famous restaurants like Antoine’s and Acme Oyster House, or venture to a more casual spot like Café Du Monde or Ralph’s on the Park. Music is everywhere in New Orleans, but some of the best venues to soak in some jazz, zydeco or blues are the Spotted Cat, House of Blues and Preservation Hall. Finally, there is a tour option for everyone; whether you are a history buff or paranormal thrill-seeker, these guided excursions offer visitors of all interests a chance to learn about the city’s intriguing past.

This race offers 30 age group qualifying slots for the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

Professionals will compete for P-500 points and $30,000 prize purse.
