The European triathlon season is hitting its stride, and all roads lead to Lower Austria this weekend. Challenge St. Pölten is set to welcome a world-class field of professional athletes, ready to battle it out on one of the most scenic yet demanding courses on the circuit. Leading the charge are two powerhouse German athletes who are currently riding a massive wave of momentum.
On the women’s side, Germany’s Caroline Pohle travels to St. Pölten as the absolute, undisputed top favorite. Pohle is putting together a truly sensational season so far, having already claimed two massive victories. Just a few weeks ago, she dominated the field at Challenge Mogán-Gran Canaria, and she backed that up last weekend with a spectacular, emotional win at The Championship in Šamorín. Deeply moved and overjoyed by her recent performances, the German top athlete is showing no signs of slowing down. This coming Sunday, she will look to keep her winning streak alive and add another prestigious title to her rapidly growing collection.
However, the victory will not be handed to her on a silver platter. More than 25 female pro athletes are scheduled to take the start line, meaning depth and competition will be fierce. Pohle will face strong opposition from seasoned contenders such as Diede Diederiks, Anna Pabinger, and Lisa-Maria Dornauer. While Pohle holds the favourite tag, middle-distance racing is always unpredictable, and a surprise upset by a rising or lesser-known name can never be ruled out on this course.
The men’s race promises an equally thrilling showdown, featuring a deep, wide-open field where several athletes have a realistic shot at the top step of the podium. Finn Grossse-Freese is undoubtedly the man to watch. At 38 in the world, he is the highest ranked male athlete on course and is coming off a fifth place at Challenge Salou-Costa Daurada a couple of weeks ago. Carrying that momentum into Austria, Grosse-Freese is hunting for a victory – or at the very least, a spot on the podium.
He will have to share the spotlight with his compatriot Frederic Funk. Funk crossed the line in seventh place last weekend – certainly not the position he originally aimed for heading into Šamorín. However, statistic-wise and performance-wise, he spoke of a strong race afterward. Funk is a fierce competitor who knows how to deliver on challenging terrains; he will firmly set his sights on a top finish in St. Pölten and will settle for nothing less than a podium battle.
Adding more fuel to the fire, Great Britain is bringing some serious firepower into the mix. Dark horses Hannes Butters and Josh Lewis are both highly capable of delivering a standout performance and disrupting the German dominance.
This will be especially true on the famously challenging course of Challenge St. Pölten. With its iconic swim in two different lakes, a breathtaking but grueling bike course, and a fast run, nearly no section of the track is truly flat. It is a honest, tough race where tactics, stamina, and sheer power matter, ensuring that only the absolute strongest athletes will rise to the top this Sunday.
