The second IRONMAN Pro Series stop in Australia, the 2025 Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns triathlon will see the world’s top professional triathletes head to Tropical North Queensland to race for a piece of the $125,000 USD prize purse and up to 5,000 series points.
The men’s professional race at this Sunday’s Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns is set to sizzle like the Queensland heat with Oceania’s top triathletes going head-to-head with a host of international challengers with prestige, points, and a place in history on the line.
No male athlete from outside of Oceania has won an IRONMAN Cairns title over 13 years of racing – a streak that could be broken this weekend with the race assembling one of the strongest start lists in its history, bolstered by its return to the IRONMAN Pro Series roster in 2025. American duo Matthew Marquardt and Matt Hanson, plus South African Olympian Jamie Riddle, pose a serious threat to Oceania’s grasp on the IRONMAN Cairns title and will undoubtedly put it all on the line as they chase vital IRONMAN Pro Series points and, for Marquardt and Hanson, IRONMAN World Championship qualification.
Top seed Hannah Berry (NZL) and third seed Kylie Simpson (AUS) have both ascended to the top step of the dais in Cairns before, Berry on debut last year while Simpson has two titles to her name.
The women’s professional IRONMAN Cairns start list also features three out of the top four finishers from the 2024 IRONMAN Pro Series, with Berry finishing fourth, Lotte Wilms (NLD) – runner-up at IRONMAN Cairns last year – third, and Jackie Hering (USA) finishing second after a stellar return to IRONMAN triathlon racing. Hering has made a last-minute decision to fly to Cairns for this weekend’s race after an unfortunate DNF at the Qatar Airways IRONMAN Hamburg European Championship two weeks ago.
