In a calendar increasingly dominated by technology and performance, there is a race in Portugal that goes in the opposite direction — and that is precisely where its success lies. The Spirit of 78 Triathlon returns on October 10 for its 10th edition, reaffirming itself as a unique celebration of the origins of triathlon.
Inspired by the first Ironman, held in 1978 in Hawaii, the event offers something rare: the chance to relive, in the 21st century, the raw and authentic essence of the sport’s early days. To be part of this special edition, interested participants have until April 30 to register. As tradition dictates, the final selection of participants will be made by lottery, scheduled for May 1.
Competing as in 1978 — or almost
The concept of Spirit of 78 is to recreate, as faithfully as possible, the conditions and spirit of the original race. This is reflected not only in the distances, but also in the atmosphere and even in the equipment used by many athletes.
At the heart of this experience is the L&G Club (Ladies & Gentlemen Club), a group that takes historical commitment to the extreme: steel bikes with frame shifters, minimalist clothing, and the unmistakable moustache — the ultimate symbol of an aesthetic that directly recalls the pioneers of triathlon.
Even so, the race remains inclusive. Athletes using modern equipment are welcome, as long as they respect one essential rule: time trial bikes and aerodynamic extensions are not allowed. Here, the focus is on the experience, not just the result.
An event that has become a benchmark
Over the past decade, Spirit of 78 has built its own identity and a loyal community, attracting participants from more than 20 nationalities. Far from being just another race, it has become an experience that many describe as a must-do at least once in a lifetime.
The 10th edition is therefore a moment of celebration — not only of the event’s history, but also of a different way of approaching triathlon, closer to its roots.
Registrations are open until April 30 at www.spiritof78.com. The draw will take place on May 1, and the race will be held on October 10.
