Rudy Von Berg (USA) looked like he had this race in the bag after dismounting his bike with close to a five minute advantage but Tyler Butterfield (BER) had other ideas. Butterfield field hit the run course in sixth place, and a 6:49 deficit to overcome. Laying down a race-best run by over five minutes, Butterfield picked off all those in front of him through out the run to take win in Mexico.
Ellie Salthouse (AUS) showed the way out of the water in the women's race and was at or near the front of the race fr much of the bike. The Aussie smacked out the fastest run on the day to seal the deal on the victory, clocking a 4:19:55 winning time.
