Andy Potts (USA) led the men out of the water with Eric Limkemann (USA), Matt Charbot (USA) and Drew Scott (USA) just seconds back. Tim Reed (AUS), one of the pre-race favorites, was accompanied by Mark Bowstead (NZL) over a minute behind as they ran into T1.
Coming into T2 Chrabot and Potts dismounted their bikes together with Canadians Trevor Wurtele and Cody Beals following a minute later.
Once on the run, Potts and Chrabot were inseparable, running shoulder to shoulder for much of the run. It wasn't until the final miles of the run before Potts was able to run clear of Chrabot, successfully defending his title by 42 seconds. reed finished off the podium in 3:43:36 race time.
Jen Spieldenner (USA) led the women out of the water, with last year’s winner Lauren Goss (USA) nipping at her heels a second back. A trio of women followed the leaders up the ramp 10 seconds later including Tami Richie (USA), Katy Blakemore (USA) and Ashley Clifford (USA).
Goss and Spieldenner were first off the bike, but there were five women within two minutes—Blakemore, Hallie Blunck (USA), Danielle Mack (USA), Anna Cleaver (USA) and Sarah Piampiano (USA). The women’s race remained tight for much of the run and, with four miles remaining there were still four women within a minute of each other—Mack, Goss, Piampiano and Blakemore. The fastest run split on the day allowed Piampiano to top the women’s field in 4:15:17. Mack was next over the line in 4:17:16, while Blakemore grabbed the final podium spot in 4:17:24.
