This story was originally published in the January/February, 2010, issue of Inside Triathlon magazine. It was part of the magazine’s 2009 Ironman World Championship Coverage. By TJ Murphy Two decades ago Mark Allen reversed the course of his life. When he stepped on the starting line of the 1989 Hawaii Ironman, he had yet to win the coveted championship even though he had been in the mix since 1982, usually failing in spectacular ways (epic physical meltdowns, internal bleeding, bike machinery... more

As of today Alberto Contador is no longer the 2010 Tour de France champion. That prestigious title now goes to Andy Schleck of Team Saxo Bank, who finished second in 2010. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has stripped Alberto Contador of his former TdF title because they found him guilty of using the performance enhancing drug clenbuterol. Today the CAS formally rejected an appeal by Contador in which he claimed he had ingested the drug in a portion of tainted meat. According to USA... more

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) has banned Tour de France champion Alberto Contador from competing for two-years for doping. The Spaniard tested positive for clenbuterol during the 2010 Tour de France, a charge he claimed was due to eating contaminated meat. The ban has been backdated to the date that he was informed of the failed test, meaning that he can resume competition at the start of August this year. However, his 2010 victory at the Tour, plus all of his wins in 2011, are now... more
Photo: Nils Nilsen I have my athletes do broken sets—rather than one long continuous swim—for testing. I find that it’s easier for swimmers to pace themselves during the test, making the results more accurate for use in workouts. In both of the test sets (one for sprint racers and the second for Olympic distance or longer) the goal is to swim the fastest sustainable speed for each repeat. Avoid sprinting on the first repeat only to fade on the last one, resulting in a big discrepancy in times.... more
On the blocks for the start of the 500So I did a swim meet on Saturday (Feb 4), my first since 8th grade. I did a reasonable taper of swimming for the meet, but still did a fair amount of running to start the week. Overall, my biking has been on the back burner to allow a strong focus on swim and run to start this season, hoping to firmly cement the strides (pun intended) I made with my more
Question from reader Maggie: I have been vegan for almost a year after being vegetarian for 15 years. I noticed that you are moving towards living a more dairy and animal/gluten free lifestyle. Just wondering if you could speak to the Vega products as I noticed you mention these nutritional items on your blog? I have been to the Vega website and have read about Brendan Brazier so I am somewhat familiar with him and these products. My sister has turned me onto your website as a source for recipe... more
You know you're having fun when times flies by and before you know it January is gone in the blink of an eye and it's February. Since I'm more of a math/science, black/white, problem/solution person, and writing is not on my "favorite past times" list, I made a goal of writing one blog a month, and up until now I've been able to stick to it. However, January has proven to be the exception, and not because of procrastination (ok, maybe a little), but because the month flew by and I honestly don't... more
First Endurance recently asked me to submit my race fueling plan (day before, race morning, as well as during the race), so they can post it on their sites. These reports from us professionals – who have tried and tested our ways through nearly every scenario – can be useful guides to folks hoping to hone their Ironman and 70.3 fueling plans. So, after summing up all the details, I thought I’d post it here on my blog as well. When I’m getting ready to turn up the fire, here is what goes into... more
Almost five weeks has gone by since the death of one of the most influential people in my life, and one of the most influential people ever to have graced the sporting fraternity. That person was a wonderful man by the name of Frank Horwill. Frank died on New Years Day 2012 aged 84. His body may have departed, but his legacy will forever live on in my memory, and in the thousands of other’s whose lives he so selflessly, generously and inspirationally touched. Those words are Frank in a nutshell.... more
The fun times continued this weekend. We come here ofter for the Ironman, Half Ironman, training camps or just weekend events. Being only just [...] more
We are having an epic weekend for training here in the desert—it could not be more beautiful for this time of year! Showing visitors our favorite cycling routes always reminds me how lucky we are to live and train here because it forces me to step back and take in the scenery with new eyes for a couple of days. I love that. Yesterday we took Kari on one of our favorite loops through Saguaro Park West and over Picture Rocks, with a couple of bonus climbs up Sweetwater and Gates Pass just to make... more
Dave Erickson and Roger Thompson were kind enough to host me on the Endurance Hour Podcast. It wasn't supposed to be quite an hour, but as per usual, I talked a lot. Too much probably. Anyway, thanks to Dave and Roger for coming up with a nice variety of questions and for letting me ramble on for far too long. Hope you all enjoy it, and I hope you can stay awake. Or at least stay interested for more
After a couple weeks of being spoiled with unseasonably warm weather here in Boulder, we were hit with 16 inches of snow overnight, so it seemed an appropriate time to jump back into some quality indoor training. As is typical with riding the Cycleops PowerBeam Pro, there is general an ebb and flow of positive energy. Today, while churning out some quality intervals, I decided to take note of some of own inner monologue. It went something like this: “Wonder how I’m going to feel today?” “Wow,... more
