DIY Open Water Swim Lesson

Wednesday 27 Jul 2016 Triathlete.com
Can’t bring a coach along to your next ocean swim? Have no fear. Follow this step-by-step guide from coach Bryan Mineo. The open water can either be an inviting place or a necessary evil to compete in triathlon, depending on your outlook. The key to making your navigation in the ocean (or lake or river) easier and more enjoyable is learning as much as you can about the dynamics of the water. To help create a safe, positive experience the next time you’re in open water, follow these steps, which I outline for my athletes during swims in the Pacific. Check conditions Standing on the shore, look out into the water, taking notice of the movement. In the ocean, each hour brings about different conditions. The better read you have on the water, the more prepared you will be to anticipate and work with its movement while swimming. Pay close attention to where the waves are breaking relative to shore. This will generally tell you where you need to dive under a wave, which could potentially be...

The Three Best Core Exercises For Endurance Athletes

Wednesday 27 Jul 2016 Paul Moore
There are lots of core exercises out there. Doing any of them is better than doing none of them. But some are definitely better for runners than others. A strong core — that is, strong abdominal and low-back muscles — enhances running performance and may reduce injury risk. The best core exercises for runners are those that mimic the specific ways the core muscles are required to work during running. Here are three moves that do just that. Supine March Why it’s good for runners: Core stability begins with the transverse abdominis, a deep abdominal muscle that needs to hold the right amount of tension to prevent excessive movement of the pelvis and lumbar spine during running. The greatest challenge this muscle faces in running is maintaining appropriate tension while the legs move freely and alternately. The Supine March is a great exercise for runners because it administers that very challenge in a controlled way. How to do it: Lie face up in the floor with both knees sharply bent and...

What I’ve Learned Wednesday: Hard Work Matters

Wednesday 27 Jul 2016 Admin
20150803_175725 One of the many things I love about endurance training is the time we have to ourselves. Time to feel our body working hard, enjoy the environment around us and let our thoughts wander in and out. Today while riding long, I was thinking about the process. We all work hard; but I know for me, there are times I feel more motivated than others. This year has been challenging as it hasn’t been a smooth ‘flow’ of train-race-recover-repeat.  When the body doesn’t fully cooperate, it’s easy to lose some motivation. However, I often find that it’s during times of adversity and setbacks that I’m forced to ask myself why I’m doing it, why it matters, and how much I’m willing to do to get back to where I want to be. Call me crazy but, I tend to embrace these challenges as much as a hard session or a competition. So, my epiphany of today was this. Hard Work Matters. The process matters. How many times have you put in months of work only to get to race day and fall flat? And you’re left thinking...

8X IRONMAN Champion Luke McKenzie Joins Gatorade Endurance Team

Monday 14 Mar 2016 Luke McKenzie
Luke McKenzie and Beth Gerdes test at GSSI in Barrington Illinois Luke McKenzie testing at GSSI in Barrington Illinois March 14th, 2016 Sports Fuel Company to Help Pro Triathlete Improve Fueling for Races CHICAGO, Illinois – March 14, 2016 – Gatorade Endurance announced the signing of eight-time IRONMAN® Champion, Luke McKenzie, to its official athlete roster. McKenzie, one of the leading professional triathletes in long-distance triathlon, is joined by partner and IRONMAN® Champion, Beth Gerdes, who joined the team late in 2015 before the IRONMAN® World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. “After a disappointing race in Kona in 2015, it’s a priority for me to get my fueling and hydration right for this season and beyond,” said McKenzie. “I’m excited to work closely with Gatorade Endurance and the Gatorade Sports Science Institute to learn how to adjust my sports nutrition plan so I can set myself further apart from my competitors.” “Luke McKenzie is one of the most respected athletes in the endurance community,” said Jeff Kearney, Head of Gatorade...

Expectations, Integrity, & Necessity

Wednesday 29 Jun 2016 Admin
20151012_153819_resized I often find when I’m struggling to digest my feelings after a race, it’s best to write and just be honest; with myself and with the world of my friends, family and fellow tri-people. It seems in this world we live in, we love to broadcast of all the great; social media allows us to put out the persona we choose, to make our life look to be ‘something’ that it may or may not be. But we often post what is appealing, positive, and feel-good inducing. I tend to prefer to talk to people personally, and I like to communicate what is “real” as much as possible. I went into Coeur d’Alene 70.3 somewhat haphazard; not in my lack of wanting to perform well, but in my preparations. Some of this was due to extenuating circumstances, but some by choice. I took a good rest after Ironman Texas which was needed. I got back into training but did so in a relaxed manner, still dealing with some foot pain. At times I opted to ride with friends rather than hammer alone for hours on end. It was fun. We...

Mont Tremblant 70.3 2016

Thursday 30 Jun 2016 Lsanderstri
Swim Start Mont Tremblant holds a special place in my heart. This is where I started to truly believe that I could compete with the best in the world, after finishing fourth at the 70.3 World Championships behind Javier Gomez, Jan Frodeno and Tim Don. It also happens to be where Erin did her first Ironman, and where my mom did her first full Ironman (after finishing the swim cancelled Ironman Florida in 2014). My mom, Erin and myself were all competing again this year in the 70.3, so it was sure to be a memorable experience. I put in four solid training blocks after St. George. My training blocks look like this: Day 1: Hard Day 2: Easy Day 3: Hard Day 4: Easy with long run Day 5: Brick Day 6: Easy with long bike Day 7: Hard Day 8: Active recovery Day 9: Off Day 10: Active recovery I will say, I did not give the active recovery days enough respect after the first two blocks. I went to bed late, woke up early, and did not hydrate / replenish nutrients adequately. By the third block I was feeling...
