Moments of Kona – Go on a final training run with Luke and Beth before the big show in Kona.

Tuesday 06 Oct 2015 Luke McKenzie
Long runs are a must when training for an Ironman. The majority of the professionals include one every week in order to prepare for their races because the physical costs of these sessions are comparably high. In order to reduce the stress on the joints, these runs are ideally done on gravel roads instead of tarmac. Moments of Sport followed Luke McKenzie and Beth Gerdes on one of their last long runs in the back country of Kona. View on Moments of Kona

RACE REPORT – PUCON IRONMAN 70.3

Friday 23 Jan 2015 Luke McKenzie
IMG_2230 I had first raced at the Pucon Ironman 70.3 two years ago and it went straight to the top for my favorite races list. This classic event has been around for a long time and is definitely one I would encourage every triathlete to experience. It isn’t just the event itself but the location, the town, the people and the atmosphere that make it so enjoyable and fun. I was disappointed to miss the race in 2014 because I had just completed a 6 day, 1300km charity ride in Australia a week prior and obviously Beth was pregnant so we stayed home in California. When the opportunity to travel to the 2015 race came several months ago I mentioned it to Beth and it didn’t take much convincing on my part for her to agree. I will probably never arrive in Pucon in good race shape as it is tough to start racing so early in the season and post holidays. I will continue to compete at this race in the future regardless because I think the enjoyment factor of racing for the pure love of it will win out on...

FAST & FURIOUS IN OCEANSIDE

Friday 31 Oct 2014 Luke McKenzie
photo (14) I enjoyed jumping in the final race of Lifetime Fitness series in Oceanside this past weekend. It was awesome to have such a high profile race so close to home and it was a great opportunity to utilize some post Kona fitness. Well … I was more “hoping” the fitness was still there. I hadn’t really done much training since Hawaii but I know in the past I seem to carry good form for a week or two after Ironman so it was worth a shot. Much to the theme of this year my swim wasn’t in front group which meant I had to ride my way back into the race. I felt really strong on the bike and by the time I racked my Scott Plasma 5 I was in 3rd place having recorded the second fastest bike split. The fatigue from Kona was still definitely in my legs on the run and the twisty, turny, up and down nature of the course wasn’t all that kind on tired legs but I stayed strong and was happy to finish a respectable 9th in a very strong short course field. Life Time...
