Andy Potts put the hammer down on the swim and bike and then cruised the run for a well executed race plan at the Subaru IRONMAN Canada.
Andy Potts (USA) put his swim prowess to good use in Alta Lake as his 47:03 swim clocking had him run into T1 with advantages of 2:47 to 3:06 on Trevor Wurtele (CAN), Pedro Gomes (PRT), Mike Aigroz (CHE), Maik Twelsiek (DEU) and Elliot Holthan (CAN).
Potts was untouchable on the bike as he effortlessly pulled away from the field. Early in the bike Gomes, Wurtele, Aigroz and Callum Millward (NZL) worked together to limit their losses but the alliance fell apart near the end of the bike. Wurtele and Gomes followed Potts into transition, but were looking at deficits nearing 13 minutes to deal with over the marathon, while Aigroz and Twelsiek dismounted their bike two and three minutes later.
Catch him if you can
Once on the run, Potts doled out his effort in a measured manner and appeared to be totally in control throughout the 42 km’s. Gomes was quick to pass Wurtele early in the run while the rest of the men struggled and started going backwards. Gomes and Wurtele were reeling in Potts but never at a pace that the leader would have to be concerned with. Potts cruised over the finish line in 8:20:23 for the win. Gomes crossed the line +7:09 later for second with Wurtele finishing the podium off with his 8:30:25 clocking.
