70.3 Busselton preview

Thursday 30 April 2015
Auckland-based Bozzone who won the 2008 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships, will head to Busselton in preparation for the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship held in Austria in August.

Bozzone has won 37 international titles, which includes 23 Ironman 70.3 or half-Ironman distance triathlon titles, the most recent was the Challenge Dubai half event which puts him in the hunt for the lucrative Triple Crown.

TWA Event Manager Ms Ashleigh Davis said “We are extremely excited to announce Terenzo Bozzone as part of our professional field for SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton. The pro field itself is the strongest we have seen at the event. It will no doubt provide a very entertaining race!”

TWA Executive Director Peter Minchin said “The addition of Terenzo to the field for SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton highlights the popularity of Busselton not only within WA but amongst the international triathlon scene. Terenzo is a truly world class athlete and his participation only adds to what is fast becoming known as one of the must do races not only in the Asia-Pacific region but right across the world”.

In addition to Bozzone, current course record holder and 2014 champion, Tim Van Berkel (AUS) will line up on the start line on Saturday 2nd May. Van Berkel is coming off a 2nd place at the Asia-Pacific IRONMAN Championships held in Melbourne on the 22nd March and 7th at the IRONMAN World Championship held in Hawaii in October last year.

The women’s field for this year’s event is also one that will not disappoint.  The 2014 champion and WA local Kate Bevilaqua (AUS) will go head to head with the 2013 champion, Liz Blatchford (AUS) and 12 x Ironman champion, Gina Crawford (NZ). Ms Davis said “It is great to see such a strong female pro field at the event. We have some experienced athletes who have raced the international scene for a number of years mixing it with the new generation of professional athletes, including 6 females who are based in WA”.

“We encourage all to head down to Busselton for a race that should not be missed” said Ms Davis.

SunSmart IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton will take place in the seaside town of Busselton (South West of WA) on Saturday 2nd May 2015.
